Review

Somewhere on the edge of the contemporary Christian music map lies Code of Ethics, a creation of Barry Blaze that's churned out techno-pop with a praise-and-worship element since 1990. After a flirtation with an edgier "organic" sound on Soulbait, Code of Ethics hits the keyboards hard again on Blaze. Comparisons to Depeche Mode and Nine Inch Nails aren't surprising after hearing the heavy synthpop strains on this release. But what may surprise some here is the lack of radio-ready hits, something Code of Ethics has previously generated despite its divergent musical style. "Hallelujah 2000" and "Psalm 19" are the two most likely candidates, with the latter sounding a lot like their "Well Done" masterpiece from Soulbait, while Blaze captures his group's essence on the former, singing, "Hallelujah to the King / Drum machines are rumbling / And though we like it loud / We'll always be a Jesus crowd." --Michael Lyttle
