Review

Claude "The Mayor" Young's DJ style is pure performance art; using two copies of each record, he doubles up the beats, phasing and cutting and scratching to build and break the mix in exciting and surprising ways. This is new-school Detroit techno in its proper context, played in true hip-hop style, with classics like Maurizio's "M5", Man Made's "Space Wreak," and Young's own "Acid Wash Conflict" appearing alongside the best of underground labels like Synewave, DJAX, and Downwards. Unlike most mix CDs, this was laid down live, in one take, in order to preserve the spontaneity of the mix (mistakes and all). Not only is this your only chance to hear these tracks properly; if you're not living in Detroit (or hooked up with a good specialist shop), it's your only chance to hear them at all. --Matthew Corwine
