Review

This is Chris T-T's fifth studio album, and '9 Red Songs' comes as a bit of a surprise. We were expecting the final part of Chris' critically-lauded London trilogy of albums (starting with `The 253' in 2001, followed by `London Is Sinking' in 2003), which he'd supposedly been working on since late 2004. But the record-in-progress turned out to be a dystopian fantasy that predicted the London terrorist bombs in raw detail. Hinging on an elaborate fiction that is now fresh history, it's unreleasable.

So Chris goes back to the drawing board. In the meantime, here's this sarcastic - but 100% serious - political jaunt. `9 Red Songs' is grubby, energetic folk-roots, recorded at Tottenham's One Cat Studio by long-time collaborator Jon Clayton (Charlotte Hatherley, KaitO, The Long Blondes). Piano, cello, banjo and accordion collide with acoustic strumming and single-take "in-a-room" singing.

`9 Red Songs' veers from heartless Scrubs-esque hospital comedy - `Tony's Heart' - to the white-hot fury of `A Plague On Both Your Houses' (images of Falluja), then jumps from an encounter with England's last talking trees (`M1 Song') to a treacle-black exploration of an apprenticeship in terrorism (`Simmer Down').

`9 Red Songs' is direct, stinging, often fearless. And when, in closing track `Preaching To The Converted', Chris gleefully undermines himself, viciously ripping the piss out of himself and everything sung up to that point, you are forced to stop and rethink the last thirty minutes. It's like the harder you were listening, the more you actually cared and the worse you got punched in the mouth.

It's 2005. The Magic Numbers are famous but so is James Blunt, while music is sold down a phoneline. Mo is dead, while Cheney lives. Sudoku is cool. For fuck's sake, shout about Chris T-T from the nearest rooftop.9 Red Songs is Chris T-T's response to the current political climate and possibly the most explosive and provocative politlical album for a generation. Snowstorm. 2005.
