Review

On paper, trumpeter Chris Botti is another smooth jazz heartthrob, a seasoned session veteran stepping out with his own mix of romantic instrumental pop. But Botti brings more care and nuance to his work than that faux category implies, and this seductive collection underlines his deeper intent in its smoky title song, a collaboration with Paul Buchanan's Scottish neo-pop band, The Blue Nile, that is sufficient excuse for entry: Buchanan's fevered yet restrained vocals answer Botti's cool, Miles-wide horn lines in a classic late-night reverie that is the set's standout, but Botti's own wordless pieces sustain the album's suave, finely crafted mood.
