Review

Rydell was one of the quintessential pure teen-idol Bobbys who rose to fame and conquered the airwaves during the period between Elvis Presley's Army induction and the arrival of the Beatles. (Ironically, Rydell starred in the film version of Bye Bye, Birdie, which poked fun at Elvis's induction.) He started his career as a drummer in a band that also featured Frankie Avalon, but Rydell was by no means a rocker--even though he recorded an entire album with Chubby Checker in 1961. Still, such pop froth as "Wild One" (his biggest hit) and the lesser-known hit singles "Forget Him" and "Good Time Baby" are pleasant and lively. Unfortunately, because of the unavailability of the Parkway-Cameo catalog, this greatest-hits package is made up of remakes. It's not horrible, but it's also not the originals. --Bill Holdship
