Review

In the '60s and '70s, British producer Gerry Anderson created a beloved sci-fi cult literally out of plaster, string, and wire. The techno-future--and admittedly kitschy--appeal of Anderson "supermarionation" puppet shows like Supercar, Fireball XL-5, and The Thunderbirds have charmed successive generations so completely that they even inspired an Orbitz.com commercial campaign. This collection chronicles the music of arguably Anderson's most technically advanced and dramatically mature series, composed by longtime Anderson collaborator Barry Gray. With its more realistic tone, Gray leans heavily on brassy, military music and evocative cues that recall some of John Barry's mystery-enhancing work on the Bond series. Fans of Gray's distinctive pop-rock kitsch won't be disappointed by tracks like "White Snow" (in two versions, including a previously unreleased stereo mix), the electro-exotica of "Lunarville" or lounge-y charms of "The Inquisition" and "Until Midnight." The action cue mini-suite "Spectrum Strikes Back" perfectly encapsulates the composer's energetic tack and use of unexpected, neo-Asian moods and modalities, music that often gracefully belies its modestly budgeted TV roots. --Jerry McCulley
