Review

Barry is the lead singer, with Holly providing harmonies and duets, and his clean, piercing tenor can be high and lonesome on the bluegrass tunes like "You're Seldom Seen" or seductively understated on a story-song like the title tune. The best part of this album, though, is the songwriting. The Tashians marry a bouncy, happy-go-lucky tune to a witty tale of how today's heartbreak becames tomorrow's "Lucky Break." The choppy, mournful sound of bluegrass has seldom been used as well as on "You're Seldom Seen," a rueful warning about the dangers of long-distance relationships. A jaunty swing tune is the basis for a comic commentary on the dangers of building a marriage on a "House of Cards." "Spinning Straw into Gold" is a lovely narrative about an immigrant who came through Ellis Island and ended up buried on his own farm in Kansas. Mixed in with these originals are overlooked gems by Cowboy Jack Clement, Governor Jimmie Davis and Mike Dowling. --Geoffrey Himes
