Review

In 2000, the American Film Institute selected the irreverent cross-dressing farce of director Billy Wilder and writer I.A.L. Diamond as the funniest movie ever made. The film's period-evoking prowess (Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis play musicians who witness Chicago's infamous St. Valentine's Day Massacre, then disguise themselves as women to flee with an all-girl band featuring Marilyn Monroe) is one of the key elements to its success, with composer Adolph Deutsch's manic pastiche of 20's hot jazz and pop its perfect musical foil. But while the Broadway veteran turned Hollywood Oscar-winner (for his MGM adaptations of Annie Get Your GunSeven Brides For Seven Brothers and Oklahoma) skillfully interpolates period chestnuts like "Down Among the Sherltering Palms" into his vibrant underscore, it's left to Marilyn Monroe to all but steal the show with saucy performances of "Runnin' Wild," "I Wanna Be Loved By You" and "I'm Thru With Love." This edition improves on the sound quality of the surviving source materials and features a concise new history of the film's difficult journey to legend. --Jerry McCulley
